Looking for a fun way to have celebrate a child's birthday? Have an art birthday party ! Projects are 
dependent on age range.
Your child's party will be approximately 1 hour of art (depending on project and age range ) and 1 hour of party!
NOTE: Decorations, invitations, drinks and food will be your responsibility. We can provide paper plates and cups and plasticware, unless you want to choose and bring those as well.
Below are some possible themes for the age group 5-7, if none of these sound like a good fit we can discuss more!
- Crowns and Castles! - Crown yourself for the day! We will make paper crowns, decorate them, and paint castles on canvas which can later be framed and hung at home. ($10 material fee per child)
- Upcycled Spaceships! - Let your imagination take you to outer space and use recycled materials to build a spaceship! We will create the spaceship of your dreams..... ($10 material fee per child)
- Make a cuddly Softie or Sock Puppet - Make a fun character and bring home for hours of imagination play..... ($10 material fee per child)
Below are some possible themes for the age group 8-12, if none of these sound like a good fit we can discuss more!
- Mosaics - Use multicolored glass tiles to create an original mosaic! The finished grout-free mosaic will be a ready to hang when you get home! ($10 material fee per child)
- Soap Dough -Use your imagination as you create an original sculpture made out of soap dough. Once hardened, it can either be used as real soap,admired as an art piece, or both! ($20 material fee per child)
- Wires & Weaving - Use sculpting wire to create a star, a fish, heart or your own idea that will pop once you add colorful woven yarn elements! Your finished artwork will be ready to display with its own wooden pedestal. ($12 material fee per child)

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR/TEACHER:
Krista Brownis from Dallas, Texas where she began her education journey pursuing an Art Education degree from TCU. She completed her undergraduate education at the University of Alaska Fairbanks with a BA and concentration in ceramics.
Krista's experience teaching art has ranged from developing homeschool arts curriculum to teaching summer art camps and general kids art classes in Texas and New York.
While in Cazenovia, Krista has developed art programming and taught children ages 2-5 for three years at Rippleton Center a preschool in Cazenovia, NY.
Krista is now a full time Teachers Assistant at Burton Street Elementary School in Cazenovia. Additionally, she is teaching the summer art program, art birthday parties and kids art classes through CazArts.

Krista Brown is from Dallas, Texas where she began her education journey pursuing an Art Education degree from TCU. Krista completed her undergraduate education at the University of Alaska Fairbanks with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a concentration in ceramics.
Krista's experience teaching in has ranged from developing a homeschool arts curriculum to teaching in an arts magnet school. She has developed arts programming and taught in arts centered summer camps in Texas, New Mexico and Alaska.
As the current art teacher at Rippleton Center, Krista is now applying all that she has learned through the years while helping preschoolers and early elementary students fall in love with art!

The focus of this workshop is on the practice and discipline of painting, its mediums and evolution into the 21st century. Participants will work with acrylic colors and will explore the many ways paint can be handled through observation and abstraction. Specific exercises will be given to explore color, light, texture,
painting by Brynne Livelsberger
transparency, impasto and composition. Instruction and demos will be given on the preparation and handling of the painted field. At each class students will be helped and critiqued on an individualized basis. This workshop is appropriate to all individuals who are interested in honing their painting skills and creative development, no matter their skill level.

Jen Pepper is a professional artist exhibiting and participating in artist residencies internationally. She was a professor of studio art for the past twenty years until the college's permanent closing.In fall 2023 she joined the Pratt Munson School of Art as an artist in residence and as their gallery coordinator. REQUIREMENTS: Students will need access to a computer (desktop or laptop), consistent and strong internet connection during the class time, use of a webcam and microphone (most laptops come with both installed), and will need to be able to purchase a one-month license for one of the Adobe programs for $34.50/mo + tax. NOTE: Scholarships do not cover the cost of the Adobe programs.
In this 6-week course you will learn the basics of what every graphic designer needs to know in this world of digitally-created images. This is an introduction to Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator, the three programs that are the foremost tools in the graphic designer's digital toolbox. We'll meet students where they are at and explore a variety of digital media and techniques, practicing with real-life examples of design projects, learning to use color, contrast, and shape to create clear messages that focus the eye. Students will explore each of the three programs during a 7-day free trial, then select one program to use to create a more in-depth project. Example projects include: Movie Poster, Book Cover and Create a Font. 
Students will join a zoom call weekly at a link provided, and sessions will include direct whole-group instruction, one-on-one instruction, solo work time with instructor assistance, and a planned break halfway through. Additionally, students will be provided tutorials and resources they can continue to use and follow outside and after the course.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR/TEACHER:
Maxx L. Hill is a Central New York artist and educator with professional teaching experience working with students at all levels, from kindergarteners through graduate students and even grandmothers all across the region: in rural and urban schools, public and charter schools, universities and community centers, supplementing homeschool students' curricula and teaching students across the country virtually. They received a Bachelors in Fine Art in 2011, and in 2013 earned their Masters in Arts Education from SUNY Oswego and NYS Certification in K-12 Visual Arts Teaching. In university they specialized in illustration, printmaking, photography, and creative writing. Since graduating, they have worked extensively as a graphic design and print specialist, and expanded their personal art practice to include weaving and publication.

Improve your drawing skills!
This six-week drawing class will help you improve upon existing skills or help you begin to understand drawing in new and exciting ways! Each week we will explore different aspects of both observational and abstract drawing while exploring many different wet and dry materials and their applications. 
This class will help students use line, value, negative space, and compositional explorations to improve how they translate their drawing skills. We will work from both observation and explore methods and materials in abstraction.

This class will allow students to continue on their cartooning journey! Starting with character creation for new students or a recap for past, we will then dive further into the world of cartooning. Learn about story mapping, panel framing, character arcs, full page illustrations and more to create your very own multiple page comic book! Welcome to students who have previously taken Cartooning Level 1 as well as students ready to take their cartoons up a notch. Students will need a 9x12 sketchbook, plenty of pencils, a white eraser and a black fine point sharpie.

David Mihill livesin the Dewitt area and is currently working as a teaching assistant at Solvay High School. He graduated from Cazenovia College in 2020 with a BFA in Visual Communications with a concentration in Illustration/Animation. He is currently working on his Master's in Education to become a high school art teacher. On the side, he does freelance graphic design and illustration work. He enjoys creating, teaching and spending time with his family.

This class is an exploration of painting with acrylic paints and mixed media. Acrylic paints lend themselves to mixed media by virtue of the flexibility to use them as you would any other painting material. We will play with different surfaces, add nature, collage, and textured with mark making and more. Start collecting materials that you would like to play with in your mixed media painting. There are no wrong materials!

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR/TEACHER:
Leigh Yardley creates work in paint and installation, situating herself as a part of the system of landscape. Yardley's most recent installation, was at Cazenovia Colleges Riesman Gallery as a part of This Land - Camino a Tierra Bendita and Camino de Sanación continued her interactions with the element of chance in the natural environment.
Leigh just retired as adjunct at SUNY Morrisville where she was awarded the New York State Chancellors Award for Excellence in Adjunct Teaching in the Visual Arts. She has actively pursued community-based projects, receiving NYSCA Decentralization grants and facilitating the organization of several arts programs. She participated in the NYFA MARK program and has been a NYFA Statewide Artist Consultant. As a Visiting Teaching Artist for CNY Aesthetic Education Program she trained with the Lincoln Center Teaching Artist Mentoring Project and Advance Seminar for Teaching Artist at the Guggenheim.

In this watercolor class, we will focus on painting the landscape using photo references. You will learn to simplify elements into a coherent composition with a strong range of values and learn to develop pleasing color relationships. This class is for the beginner as well as the intermediate painter.
NOTE: We will be working from images. So if you have a computer or tablet to bring, that would be helpful, but not required.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR/TEACHER:
Eric Shute was born and raised in upstate New York and at an early age began his artistic training at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse. Eric holds a degree in Education from SUNY New Paltz, a degree in Advertising and Illustration from Mohawk Community College and a BFA from Syracuse University.
In addition to his academic training, Mr. Shute studied painting technique with nationally recognized artists: Hong Nian Zhang, (oil painting), advanced watercolor with Richard Segalman, advanced abstract painting with Jenny Nelson and water-based monotype with Lisa Mackie all at the Woodstock School of Art.

Two Woven Willow Trellises for the Garden
In this exciting two-day weekend workshop, Bonnie Gale will teach how to make two beautiful woven willow trellises for the garden.
Each participant will make their own two trellises, ready to take home and use in the Spring garden!
The first trellis is the English hoop trellis that measures 20 inches in diameter and will stand 20 inches above the ground. It is a series of interwoven hoops that have a band of continuous horizontal weaving above the ground. It was traditionally used in Elizabethan gardens to support shorter plants. The second trellis is the pea cage trellis made for the support of climbing plants. The pea cage can be woven up to 5-feet tall. After inserting and securing the vertical stakes, a similar band of horizontal base weaving is followed by two spirals of pairing weave up the stakes. The Pea Cage provides a strong design feature in the garden.
All structures will be built inside using a loaned jig. These trellises can be woven outside in the ground but the jig system allows indoor weaving and less bending and kneeling. Willow, other woods and temporary fasteners will be provided. In addition, we are hoping to have a trip to the Willow Patch in Cazenovia over the weekend with discussion of growing and harvesting willow.
The willow materials have been generously funded by an anonymous donor.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR/TEACHER:
Bonnie Gale has been a professional traditional willow basketmaker and willow artist for the past forty years. A Kennedy Scholar with degrees from the University of Manchester, SUNY-ESF and MIT, she has trained with professional European willow basketmakers. She is proprietor of "English Basketry Willows" (a small business selling imported European basketry willows, willow basketry books and tools) and founder of the "American Willow Growers Network" promoting the growing and the exploration of the uses of willow. She teaches traditional willow basketry across the United States at major conventions and guilds. She writes extensively on traditional willow basketry and willow growing. Bonnie is the recipient of many awards, including a NYFA Artist Fellowship in 1999 as well as being
featured in television programs, books and articles. Since 2004, she has completed over 50
living willow structures. Recently, she started making willow caskets.

In this class, we'll explore Gelli Printing to create unique and colorful monoprints (one-of-a-kind printmaking technique). The prints can then be used to make personalized stationery, cards, a stand-alone wall hanging, or can be incorporated into collage work. The process involves the application of acrylic paint and other media to a specially designed flexible gel plate. Gelli Printing is a fun and versatile way to experiment with image making by layering color and textures, and incorporating masks and stencils.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR/TEACHER:
Jen Gandee is the owner of the Gandee Gallery in Fabius, NY which specializes utilitarian ceramics and fine art. In addition, she is a potter, but also works in photography, collage, and printmaking. She earned a BFA from West Virginia University and an MFA from Syracuse University. Gandee has taught a variety of art courses at
LeMoyne College, Cazenovia College and Syracuse University. She is currently an Assistant Adjunct Professor of Art at Cayuga Community College.

Katya Krenina is an award-winning illustrator of fifteen books for children and a native of Lviv, Ukraine. She attended two Ukrainian Art Institutes and majored in textile and tapestry design. She holds a BFA and MA in illustration from Syracuse University and MFA in Interdisciplinary Art from Goddard College. Katya illustrated fifteen books for children, which received many national and international awards. She teaches art at Le Moyne college and is the creative mind behind Silk&Soul, a brand of silk accessories and clothing, known for its luxurious textures and eclectic designs.

This class will allow students to continue on their cartooning journey! Starting with character creation for new students or a recap for past, we will then dive further into the world of cartooning. Learn about story mapping, panel framing, character arcs, full page illustrations and more to create your very own multiple page comic book! Welcome to students who have previously taken Cartooning Level 1 as well as students ready to take their cartoons up a notch. We will create luminous watercolors of flowers. We'll find a way to be loose, but also convey the essence of the flowers we're painting.

Pastel Painting Studio
This two-day workshop is an opportunity to receive individualized instruction in a supportive and inspiring environment. Beginning through advanced levels are welcome. This workshop is an opportunity to learn about the broad range of pastel products and techniques, to further develop your personal style, and embrace creative exploration. Colorful still life arrangements will be our subject.
Day one will begin with a conversation on how to design a strong composition. Our next step will be to make black and white value studies of our subject. Then we will move on to color, looking at the warm and cool contrasts of light and shadow and the effect of saturated and muted hues in describing form and space. You'll have the opportunity to work with acrylic underpainting and on colored papers to explore color interaction. Our session will end with a group critique, offering not only a chance to assess paintings but to share ideas about both concept and craft. Class size is limited.

"Red & Green Apples" by Mary Padgett - pastel
Mary Padgett's paintings are distinctive for her use of color. She works in both oil and pastel, is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America and has been featured in American Artist and Pastel Journal magazines. Her paintings are in numerous private and public collections, including Towers Perrin, Takasago International, and the Long Island Jewish Medical Center. She has participated in many local and national exhibitions, with exhibition and competition awards from the Pastel Society of America, the Fenimore Art Museum, and the Finger Lakes Plein Air and Frank Bette Plein Air Painting Competitions.
Mary was educated at Boston University and Syracuse University. She has taught painting and color courses for Syracuse University and Cazenovia College, and currently conducts workshop.

Explore color, light and texture and learn to paint with acrylics.
In these classes we will enjoy the process of painting with acrylics and explore color, light, texture and composition through different subject matter such as still life, landscape (weather permitting), portrait and abstraction. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR/TEACHER:
Leigh Yardley creates work in paint and installation, situating herself as a part of the system of landscape. Yardley's most recent installation, was at Cazenovia Colleges Riesman Gallery as a part of This Land - Camino a Tierra Bendita and Camino de Sanación continued her interactions with the element of chance in the natural environment.
Leigh just retired as adjunct at SUNY Morrisville where she was awarded the New York State Chancellors Award for Excellence in Adjunct Teaching in the Visual Arts. She has actively pursued community-based projects, receiving NYSCA Decentralization grants and facilitating the organization of several arts programs.
She participated in the NYFA MARK program and has been a NYFA Statewide Artist Consultant. As a Visiting Teaching Artist for CNY Aesthetic Education Program she trained with the Lincoln Center Teaching Artist Mentoring Project and Advance Seminar for Teaching Artist at the Guggenheim. Yardley received her MFA from Lesley University College of Art and Design and undergraduate degrees at Skidmore College and SUNY Oswego.
She has exhibiting widely since 1994. Her work can be found at Cazenovia Artisans, Cazenovia NY. She resides in Hubbardsville NY with her husband Bruce Moseley.

Dan will help you use perspective and attention to detail to lay out a scene with pencil and use values & color to create depth while painting. Among many other topics important to the art of watercolor painting, students will learn:

Dan Shanahan is a New York based artist inspired to make pictures that blend reality with a cup of fantasy, a pinch of exaggeration, a sprinkle of dreams, and a quart of wonder. Dan's degree is in Mechanical Engineering, but he has always enjoyed art. His earliest artistic interests were cartoons and illustration since way before he can remember. He has been Plein air painting since 2015, focusing on urban settings in Central NY. These paintings have been shown in the Everson Museum, Onondaga Historical Association, and Gandee Gallery. He has taught Plein air watercolor painting through various venues in Syracuse, NY and workshops at the Everson Museum.

This class will focus on using watercolor to paint an architectural scene. If weather permits we will be painting in the town of Cazenovia. If not, we will paint using Google Earth.
Dan will help you use perspective and attention to detail to lay out a scene with pencil and use values & color to create depth while painting. Among many other topics important to the art of watercolor painting, students will learn:
- Use perspective to draw a realistic world
- Decide when to include detail and when to leave it them out
- Colors & values beyond what you see
- Straying from reality to improve the painting!
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR/TEACHER:
Dan Shanahan is a New York based artist inspired to make pictures that blend reality with a cup of fantasy, a pinch of exaggeration, a sprinkle of dreams, and a quart of wonder. Dan's degree is in Mechanical Engineering, but he has always enjoyed art. His earliest artistic interests were cartoons and illustration since way before he can remember. He has been Plein air painting since 2015, focusing on urban settings in Central NY. These paintings have been shown in the Everson Museum, Onondaga Historical Association, and Gandee Gallery. He has taught Plein air watercolor painting through various venues in Syracuse, NY and workshops at the Everson Museum.

Krista's experience teaching art has ranged from developing homeschool arts curriculum to teaching summer art camps and general kids art classes in Texas and New York.
While in Cazenovia, Krista has developed art programming and taught children ages 2-5 for three years at Rippleton Center a preschool in Cazenovia, NY.
Krista is now a full time Teachers Assistant at Burton Street Elementary School in Cazenovia. Additionally, she is teaching the summer art program, art birthday parties and kids art classes through CazArts.

Design and fabricate your own original fashions using various materials and embellishments. All will be sized for a fashion doll that you will get to take home! We will also craft accessories and decorate shirts and hats! The week ends with you getting to share your work with family and friends. Due to the material heavy nature of this week, there is a slightly larger materials fee. Participants should be comfortable with scissors and cutting fabric. There will be plastic needles available and glue if they decide not to sew.

What can you make with cardboard? The possibilities are endless! We will explore the use of different textures and 3-D construction techniques as we create cardboard self-portraits, build our own "technology," construct and furnish small imaginary spaces, and possibly explore making cardboard cuisine. At the end of the week your friends and family are invited to see what you have accomplished.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR/TEACHER:
Clair Joyce is currently the Art teacher for Huntingdon and Roberts Elementary and Middle School in Syracuse, NY. She is an artist who utilizes many techniques! She received her BFA in Printmaking from the Kansas City Art Institute, and an MFA in Painting from University of Georgia where she perfected a method of "painting" using Elmer's glue and glitter. She was artistic director at Paul Mesner Puppets where she built puppets and sets.
Claire has written online columns for both ReadyMade Magazine and CRAFT, and has built and designed costumes and puppets for the stage as well as maintained a studio life working in two dimensions. In addition to participating in residencies within the United States, Belgium and China, her work has been shown both nationally and internationally. She currently lives in Syracuse, NY where she runs a small portrait business (www.tinytwohourportaits.com) and sews with (and for) her children.

IMPORTANT NOTE – Driving up the gravel driveway to Carpenter's Barn is no longer allowed for any reason.
Parking is available just inside the entrance of Lakeland Park (go west at the Brae Loch traffic light). You can walk on the sidewalk or on the gravel driveway to Carpenter's Barn.
Other parking is also available nearby (e.g., on Carpenters Street across the street from Carpenters Barn).
If you need assistance or have special needs, you may drive up to be dropped off in front of the Barn on Forman St (Rt 20) by pulling in at the garage door/overhang to unload. The car must be moved after unloading.
