There is no "one way" to paint. This course will introduce six different ways to approach a watercolor painting, providing you hands-on experience with different methods. Painting in different ways will give you the feel of the techniques so you'll understand how to start any painting.

Each class will begin with a demo that focuses on one of the methods, followed by time spent painting. Individual help and instruction are part of the class.

Start collecting ideas now (photo references, sketches, or studies) and bring them to class.  Please note that for sessions 2-5, it would be best to prepare a detailed drawing to bring to class.

Look over the materials list ahead of time in case something needs to be ordered online. The quality of the paper is very important to the kind of painting we will do – there will be some sheets available at class for $2.25.

The six methods we will cover:

  • White Paper With Expressive Brush Strokes
  • Follow the Bead and Pull the Puddle
  • Control
  • Layers
  • Abstract with Realistic Focal Point
  • Wet-in-wet With Negative Painting

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR/TEACHER:
Kate Untiedt
has been working with fiber for over 30 years, developing skills in a range of fiber techniques.  Over the last several years she found a passion for sharing these skills with others; seeing the value in the mindfulness that can be embraced in the making process and the confidence that can be built through creating.  Needle felting is her favorite skill to teach; loving the use of natural fibers and the freedom this technique allows for. Classes focus on the core skills to create and an openness to each persons personal style. She encourages approaching art without judgment; making for the process rather than the product (but the products are definitely fun to see!!)

Pastel Painting Studio
This two-day workshop is an opportunity to receive individualized instruction in a supportive and inspiring environment. Beginning through advanced levels are welcome. This workshop is an opportunity to learn about the broad range of pastel products and techniques, to further develop your personal style, and embrace creative exploration. Colorful still life arrangements will be our subject.

Day one will begin with a conversation on how to design a strong composition. Our next step will be to make black and white value studies of our subject. Then we will move on to color, looking at the warm and cool contrasts of light and shadow and the effect of saturated and muted hues in describing form and space. You'll have the opportunity to work with acrylic underpainting and on colored papers to explore color interaction. Our session will end with a group critique, offering not only a chance to assess paintings but to share ideas about both concept and craft. Class size is limited.
